LAW – VOCABULARY

Actions (n): hành động – If people commit a crime then they should be punished and made to accept the consequences of their actions.

Authority (n): nhà chức trách – The social system generally consists of administrative authority that formally deals with crime and a force of representative officers to enforce the laws and act on behalf of society.

Burglary (n): trộm – Audio equipment was stolen in a burglary at the mall.

Convict (n): người bị kết án tù: The novels begins with Pip’s meeting with an escaped convict.

Crime (n): tội phạm – Crime can increase if people protect their property less.

Crime rate (n): tỉ lệ tội phạm – This particular theory relates an increase in crime rate to an increase in crime opportunities and a decrease in protection.

Criminal (n): tên tội phạm – Perhaps this because prisoners mix with other criminals when they are in jail.

Deterrent (n): vật ngăn cản – We can also achieve this by passing new laws that will act as a deterrent.

Evidence (n): bằng chứng – The victim gave evidence against the accused.

Fine (n): vé phạt – I was given a parking fine again yesterday. It’s costing me a fortune.

Fraud (n): gian lận, lừa đảo – Some people believe that non-violent crimes or so-called victimless crimes such as fraud should be punished less.

Imprisonment (n): hình phạt tù – He was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder.

Practice: Making sentences with each of the words above.

Speaking Part: Answer those questions:

1. Do you think laws are acceptable to the people? Why is that?
2. Do people like being a police officer in your country?Why/why not?
3. What qualities should a good police officer possess?
4. Should people be penalized when they use mobile phones while driving?

Describe a good law in your country

You should say:

• What it is
• How you know about it
• What people think about this law
• and explain why you think that it is a good law.
