COMMUNICATION – VOCABULARY

Communication (n): giao tiếp – There’s something that prevents successful communication.

Dialect (n): tiếng địa phương, phương ngữ – Just as biologists rarely see a new species arise, linguist rarely get to discover an unknown dialect or even better, to see a new language being born.

Language barrier (n): rào cản ngôn ngữ – There was a very real language barrier.

Sign language (n): ngôn ngữ kí hiệu – The catch is that it is not a spoken language but, rather, a sign language that arose spontaneously in deaf children.

Spontaneous (adj): tự nhiên, tự nguyện – His jokes seemed spontaneous, but were in fact carefully prepared beforehand.

Incoherent (adj): rời rạc, không mạch lạc – His rushed reparation resulted in an incoherent speech.

Inherent (adj): cổ hữu – What intrigues the linguists is that, for a sign language to emerge spontaneously, deaf children must have some inherent tendency to link gestures to meaning.

Sophisticated (adj): phức tạp, tinh vi – By conducting experiments on people who attended the school at various points in its history, Dr. Senghass has shown how NSL has become more sophisticated over time.

Comprehend (v): hiểu rõ, hiểu thấu đáo – The infinite distances of space are too great for the human mind to comprehend.

Converse (v): giao tiếp – Dr. Senghen showed this by asking signers of different ages to converse about a set of photographs that each could see.

Gesture (v): ra hiệu, điệu bộ – He gestured to the guard and they withdrew.

Illustrate (v): minh họa – His lecture was illustrated with photos taken during the expedition.
